Syncope
Key points
- simple faint: no restriction
- single episode, explained and treated: 4 weeks off
- single episode, unexplained: 6 months off
- two or more episodes: 12 months off Other conditions
- stroke or TIA: 1 month off driving, may not need to inform DVLA if no residual neurological deficit
- NOTE: these are the SYNCOPE rules. SEIZURE rules are different and stricter — 6 months off after a first unprovoked seizure, 12 months for established epilepsy (see the Epilepsy: Treatment chapter). Do not apply the syncope figures to a seizure question.
- Current DVLA detail: 'multiple' episodes means TWO OR MORE WITHIN 24 MONTHS · reflex (vasovagal) syncope with a RELIABLE PRODROME, not occurring at the wheel, generally needs no notification and no cessation · the older distinction between episodes while sitting and while standing has been dropped.
