Fetal Alcohol Syndrome & Zieve's Syndrome
Key points
- Fetal alcohol syndrome: growth retardation, characteristic facies (short palpebral fissures, smooth philtrum, thin upper lip), CNS abnormalities, cardiac defects.
- No safe level of alcohol in pregnancy is established.
- Zieve's syndrome: triad of haemolytic anaemia + jaundice + hyperlipidaemia in alcoholic liver disease.
- Zieve's typically resolves with alcohol abstinence.
