Ophthalmology · Pathway 4
Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus
Key points
- HZO: V1 (ophthalmic) division shingles; Hutchinson's sign (vesicles on the tip/side of the nose) predicts eye involvement (nasociliary branch).
- Complications: keratitis, uveitis, secondary glaucoma, post-herpetic neuralgia.
- Management: oral antivirals (aciclovir) within 72 h; ophthalmology review if eye involved.
- Elderly/immunocompromised at higher risk.
