Non-Gonococcal Urethritis
Key points
- Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU, sometimes referred to as non-specific urethritis) is a term used to describe the presence of urethritis when a gonococcal bacteria are not identifiable or the initial swab.
- Chlamydia trachomatis - most common cause
- Mycoplasma genitalium - thought to cause more symptoms than Chlamydia Management
- contact tracing
- TREATMENT: DOXYCYCLINE 100 mg twice daily for 7 days is now the preferred first-line option, with azithromycin an ALTERNATIVE — BASHH moved away from single-dose azithromycin because of increasing MACROLIDE RESISTANCE in Mycoplasma genitalium, which single-dose azithromycin can induce.
- Where Mycoplasma genitalium is identified or suspected, test for macrolide resistance and treat under specialist guidance — do NOT simply give repeated single-dose azithromycin.
