Cardiology · Pathway 51
Multifocal Atrial Tachycardia
Key points
- MAT: irregular rhythm from ≥ 3 different atrial sites (≥ 3 morphologically distinct P waves).
- More common in elderly patients with chronic lung disease (e.g. COPD).
- Management: correct hypoxia and electrolyte disturbances.
- Rate-limiting calcium channel blockers (verapamil) often first-line.
- Cardioversion and digoxin are NOT useful in MAT.
Decision points in this pathway
- Rate control still needed?
